District Attorney 

Mission Statement:
To successfully prosecute criminal offenses for the State of Wisconsin in La Crosse County in order to fulfill our statutory responsibility; to obtain justice for the victims of crimes; appropriate punishment for offenders; and to make our community a peaceful and safe place to live. 

What We Do…
The District Attorney of La Crosse County is assisted directly by one Deputy District Attorney, eight Assistant District Attorneys an Office Supervisor and a legal staff of 13, which includes  Victim Witness personnel, Legal Secretaries, Clerks and a part-time Investigator.  The District Attorney, Deputy and Assistant District Attorneys, represent the State of Wisconsin in the five branches of La Crosse County Circuit Court, generally in connection with criminal cases. Within the office, prosecutors specialize in the prosecution of offenses involving homicides, drug violations, sexual assaults, white-collar crimes, domestic violence, crimes against children and traffic crimes. The office prosecutes felonies, misdemeanors, traffic and ordinance violations and also handles criminal matters involving juveniles.  

 

Each year the office files approximately 900 felony and 2,000 misdemeanor cases against defendants for crimes ranging from disorderly conduct to murder; handles 800 forfeiture matters; files 1,000 criminal traffic complaints for offenses ranging from operating without a valid license to drunk driving; conducts pre-trials and negotiates settlement or represents the State in 2000 matters involving other traffic offenses and files approximately 200 juvenile petitions.

  • The provision of assistance to victims and witnesses of cases handled by the District Attorney’s Office

Other Services Provided:
  • The prosecution of civil cases in which the State of Wisconsin is a party
  • The collection of worthless checks issued in La Crosse County
  • The collection of restitution prior to sentencing

Services for victims of crime and witnesses are provided through the Victim Witness Program within the District Attorney’s Office.
