Welcome to the La Crosse County Health Department.  We strive to promote a healthful community for all.  We achieve our mission through advocacy, collaboration and using an equity-based approach within our work.  As a nationally accredited department, we also focus on using evidence-based practices, quality improvement and systems change models within our work.  We look forward to working with you as we help create and support healthy living in La Crosse County!

Who We Are

We are the local public health department for La Crosse County, Wisconsin.  With a staff of 58 we serve over 120,000 people in our county and partner with individuals and entities to improve health outcomes for the population.

What We Do

Our work focuses on protecting your health, protecting the environment, and working with community partners to improve health and prevent health inequities.

Ways this occurs include

  • Protecting Your Health
  • Providing programs to improve nutrition
  • Providing immunizations
  • Promoting screening for sexually transmitted diseases, cancers, and other health conditions
  • Performing disease investigation and follow up
  • Educating on risk factors and general information related to public health

Protecting the Environment

  • Inspecting restaurants, grocery stores, and food vendors to ensure food safety
  • Testing water quality at beaches and in publicly accessed pools to let you know if it’s safe to swim
  • Ensuring well water is safe to drink and septic systems are functioning properly
  • Following of human health hazard and animal bites

Improving overall Community Health
